The mind is a
black box.
In aviation, the flight recorder sits quietly in the fuselage, faithfully capturing everything, without judgement. Your mind works the same way. Blackbox Journal helps you access what it's already recorded, so you can finally read your own story.
Where this began
After five years of solo travelling, filled with purpose, adventure, and an almost uncomfortable sense of freedom, I returned to London. And I struggled.
The healthy habits and routines I'd built on the road were replaced by unhealthy ones, or simply the lack of any at all. I tried every strategy I could find: starting with the easiest task, accountability partners, countless productivity apps. None of it stuck. I was efficient by nature. Mindfulness was never something I'd even considered, let alone practised.
Looking back, what I now call my darkest period was not a coincidence. It was a turning point. It forced me to go back to basics: self-reflection and daily gratitude, two practices I've since come to understand as fundamental. I recognised that my thinking patterns were standing in my own way, and that I was pursuing goals that had very little to do with my own values or where I actually was.
"For me personally, a lot of great things would not have happened without that time. You are holding one of those great things right now."
Olu Okunola, FounderTwo questions that changed everything
Since internalising the practice of gratitude, I put my energy into building a tool that helps people honestly answer two questions:
What makes me happy? And which habits can bring more of that into my life?
No matter which goals you want to reach, positive habits built in small, consistent, and realistic steps are the best way to get there. And the good news is: you don't need to hit rock bottom to start. You don't need a traumatic wake-up call like I did.
The Black Box Journal began as a physical product: a structured A5 journal built around two five-minute sessions: one in the morning to set an intention, one in the evening to close the loop. Time-proven mindfulness practices used by some of the most successful people in the world, made simply and beautifully for you.
From paper to pattern recognition
People who used the physical journal told us it worked. But they also told us they'd skip weeks, lose the thread, and have no way to see their patterns over time. A journal that doesn't remember is just paper.
The app is the answer to that problem. It takes the structure that already works: gratitude, intention-setting, evening reflection, Wheel of Life, and makes it persistent, searchable, and able to notice things you'd miss yourself. The AI doesn't replace the practice. It reads the data the practice generates.
In aviation, the flight recorder doesn't tell you how to fly. It captures what actually happened, so you can understand it clearly. Blackbox Journal works the same way.
What we stand for
Precision over warmth
We'd rather give you an accurate observation than a comforting one. Growth comes from clarity, not reassurance.
Pattern recognition over comfort
Noticing the loop is more useful than being told the loop is okay. That's what the AI is for.
Privacy as architecture
Journal entries are some of the most sensitive data a person can produce. We built the system so even we can't read them.
Proof over hype
The physical journal worked before the app existed. We didn't start with a tech idea. We started with a validated practice.
